Dear Troop 642 Parents and Scoutmasters, The 2008 Friends of Scouting campaign is now underway. For those new to the Troop, Friends of Scouting is the annual fund-raising effort of the Sam Houston Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Friends of Scouting raises over half of the Council’s annual income. The Council spends 84% of its budget on camping, activities, programs and services. These funds help support facilities that our Troop uses, such as El Rancho Cima and Camp Strake. In addition, these funds allow the Council to extend financial support to troops that may not have the resources of our troop. Please help continue these important programs. The Council spends approximately $140 for each of the 100,000 young people currently involved in its programs. The Council especially looks to strong units like Troop 642 to help defray some of their expenses. They have asked each of us to consider a contribution of $140 to cover the cost of one scout. Troop 642’s goal is 100% participation by all families, if possible. While we would ask you to consider the Council’s recommended gift, we would appreciate any contribution, regardless of the amount! Also, please let us know if you work for a company that has a matching gift program. We will distribute a brochure which describes the Friends of Scouting campaign in greater detail at our Troop and Troop Committee meetings.
